Research is currently being done to determine if there are any health risks associated with genetically modified foods. Current safety issues being studied are the potential allergens, toxicity, the genetic modification process, the instability of newly expressed proteins and possible environmental health risks that may have arose indirectly as a result of GM foods. As of now, scientists are unclear as to whether GM foods pose any threat to the health of humans due to their complexity.

Current knowledge is being produced from a variety of sources. This includes the individual scientists conducting the experiments, publishers, and academic journals.

Testing
Foods are tested through a series of risk assessments following Codex guidelines, created by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and World Health Organization (WHO) to develop food guidelines and standards to protect consumers and ensure fair trade.
